Know You Retailer and Save More Money

  Why are retailer habits important?

It is a well-known business policy that it is easier to keep current customers than it is to attract new ones. It is, therefore, in the best interest of any retailer to be predictable in their selling habits. You can learn their patterns by signing up for the newsletter where the retailer will email you exactly when and where the markdowns are. Here's a list of the most popular retailers.

Amazon

This is the largest online retailer so it will pay to learn how to find their best deals. Every Friday, Amazon lists 90-125 or so items at a reduced price as part of their (aptly named) Friday Sale. Most likely you won't find something you need, but you never know!

On days other than Fridays, visit their Today's Deals section which, awkwardly enough, usually has better deals and many more items! These are often with mail-in rebates.

Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples

These guys are fiercely competitive and at no time does that show more than on Sundays. At the same time as their newspaper circulars are printed, many deals are posted online. FunkyFoof lists many of these deals, which tend to be technology related, each Sunday. These bargains are typically available through the next Saturday, but the best deals sell out early, sometimes by Sunday morning. This is truly where the early bird gets that cheap digital camera!

It is tough to say whether any of these retailers offer better prices than the other, as the prices are very similar. Just remember that you most likely will have to pay tax since all these guys have brick-and-mortar stores in most states.

For the most part, anything not advertised on their Sunday Specials can usually be found cheaper elsewhere online, like from Amazon and Buy.com

Buy.com
 Deal of the Day

This site has a daily "Deal Of The Day" where a product is advertised at a low enough price that you can rest assured is unbeatable.

Like Amazon, Buy.com offers free shipping on most items with a $25 purchase.

Buy.com is desperately trying to show that it is better than Amazon. They generally sells electronics, books, and CDs/DVDs and the difference in price from Amazon is usually only a few cents. Best-selling books can sometimes differ by several dollars, so make a habit of comparing Amazon and Buy.com when you buy books and electronics. Funkyfoof usually lists prices from both retailers when their is a significant difference.

DELL

If you decide to remember only one thing from this page, let it be that you should NEVER purchase anything from DELL without a code. Funkyfoof lists these codes as they are published. Codes are published every 2-3 days and are either percentage-off or dollar-off codes, sometimes both. If two codes exist they can sometimes be "stacked", which means they can be applied together to get double savings. Codes are usually published with an expiration date and time, but DELL has a habit of discontinuing these codes after a certain number of uses (typically 2000 or 2500). Some of these codes are so hot (e.g. the infamous 41% OFF all computers released 10/04) that they expire almost minutes after published. That is the advantage in checking with Funkyfoof daily.

DELL not only sells computers, but they have very good deals on other electronics, including digital cameras. With a code, digital cameras are often cheaper than both Amazon and Buy.com.

Join the DELL Newsletter to get the codes emailed to you when they are published.
